A former employee has filed a lawsuit against a prestigious educational institution, alleging discrimination and retaliation under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Camile L. Jordan, the plaintiff, lodged her complaint in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on October 14, 2024, accusing Northwestern University of wrongful termination and discriminatory practices.
The case revolves around allegations that Northwestern University engaged in unlawful employment practices by discriminating against Camile L. Jordan due to her disability. Jordan, an African-American woman residing in Chicago, was employed by Northwestern University from January 2018 until her termination on July 14, 2023. She claims that despite being a qualified individual with disabilities—specifically chronic depression and anxiety—her condition did not impede her ability to perform essential job functions. Nevertheless, she alleges that the university treated her differently than other employees without disabilities.
Jordan asserts that after requesting reasonable accommodations for her disability, she faced increased scrutiny and was ultimately denied these accommodations. The situation escalated when she was allegedly retaliated against and terminated on November 20, 2023. According to Jordan's complaint, these actions resulted in significant emotional distress and financial loss. She further contends that Northwestern University's conduct was malicious and demonstrated reckless disregard for her protected rights under the ADA.
In response to these grievances, Jordan filed a discrimination charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on February 28, 2024. Following this filing, she received a notice from the EEOC granting her the right to pursue legal action against Northwestern University.
Through this lawsuit, Jordan seeks several forms of relief from the court. She requests a declaration that Northwestern University's conduct violated her rights and calls for injunctive relief that includes reinstatement and promotion to a higher position within the university. Additionally, she seeks compensatory damages for lost income and emotional suffering as well as coverage for legal costs including attorney's fees.
Representing Camile L. Jordan is Michael T. Smith of Schaumburg, Illinois. The case is identified as Case No: 24 cv 10194 in front of an unnamed judge at this stage.
