A visually-impaired individual has taken legal action against a jewelry company, alleging that its website is inaccessible to blind and visually-impaired users. Nicole Davis filed the complaint on November 15, 2024, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against Mejuri (US), Inc.

Nicole Davis, who requires screen-reading software to access online content, accuses Mejuri of failing to design and maintain its website, Mejuri.com, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The complaint highlights that this oversight prevents visually-impaired individuals from accessing goods and services available to sighted customers. According to Davis, "Mejuri.com contains significant access barriers that make it difficult if not impossible for blind and visually-impaired customers to use the website." These barriers include inadequate alternative text for images, improper heading structures, inaccessible forms, and reliance on mouse-only navigation. Davis attempted to purchase earrings from Mejuri.com but was unable due to these accessibility issues.

The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction requiring Mejuri to modify its website policies and practices to ensure full accessibility for blind users. Additionally, Davis demands compensatory damages for the alleged discrimination faced by her and others similarly affected. The case underscores the importance of web accessibility in an era where online shopping is increasingly essential for individuals with mobility challenges.

Representing Nicole Davis is attorney Paul Camarena. The case has been assigned Case No.: 1:24-cv-11779 in front of a judge at the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
