Thevatheril and Masini Obtain Defense Verdict In One of The Last Cook-County Medical Malpractice Cases for 2024

Swanson, Martin & Bell, LLP attorneys Aiju C. Thevatheril and Isabella A. Masini secured a defense verdict on behalf of their client, a Hospitalist, in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.

In this case, the Plaintiff claimed he had not been properly anticoagulated after bilateral lower leg tendon rupture surgery, resulting in the patient developing sub-massive and bilateral pulmonary emboli.  

The defendant claimed that the switch of anticoagulation medication from Lovenox to Aspirin was appropriate. In addition to the Hospitalist, the Plaintiff had sued the orthopedic surgeon, a nursing home and nurses, Nurse Practitioner and an Internist at the Nursing home.

After a 3-week trial, Plaintiff, a lawyer, asked the Jury for $4.2 million in damages. The Jury returned a defense verdict in favor of all defendants.
