The Barnes & Thornburg Racial and Social Justice Foundation has awarded a $50,000 grant to Girls Inc. of Chicago, a nonprofit providing structured programs, single-session activities and special events to 800-1,200 South Side, K-12 girls each school year.
“We are committed to providing school-based and city-wide programs to school-aged girls in need throughout our communities,” said Girls Inc. Director of Development Lona Slaughter. “Thank you to Barnes & Thornburg and the Racial and Social Justice Foundation for their support as we continue to advance our social justice and leadership programming for high school girls, provide professional development for our team members, and create action plans focused on board and staff recruitment, economic empowerment opportunities for all, and future programming.”
Girls Inc. was founded in 2017 to ensure school-aged girls from Chicago’s South Side have the opportunities and experiences needed to thrive in the classroom, the boardroom and beyond. Girls Inc. is dedicated to equipping girls to reach their full potential, ensuring they grow up healthy, educated and independent.
“We are proud to support Girls Inc. and its unwavering commitment to empowering the next generation of female leaders,” said Michael A. Carrillo, managing partner of the firm’s Chicago office and secretary of the foundation. “By providing girls on Chicago’s South Side with the tools, experiences and opportunities to thrive, Girls Inc. is shaping a future where all girls can reach their full potential. We are honored to contribute to this transformative work.”
