A former employee has filed a lawsuit against two organizations, alleging severe workplace discrimination and harassment. Marlon Campbell Jr. initiated the legal action on March 13, 2025, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against Delta T Group Illinois, Inc. and The Salvation Army.
The complaint centers around accusations of race-based and sex-based discrimination, harassment, and retaliation under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Section 1981. Campbell claims that during their employment as a correctional monitor at The Salvation Army's facility from December 2024 until January 21, 2025, they were subjected to a hostile work environment due to their race (African American) and gender identity (non-binary). According to the lawsuit, coworkers made derogatory comments about Campbell's gender identity and sexual orientation. A particular incident on January 2, 2025, involved a resident using racial and homophobic slurs against Campbell. Despite reporting these incidents to supervisors like Ms. Cowen at The Salvation Army, Campbell alleges that no adequate investigation or protective measures were taken by either defendant.
Campbell further asserts that after reporting these discriminatory acts and harassment, they faced retaliation leading to their suspension without clear communication regarding their employment status. On January 21, 2025, they were informed that their assignment had been terminated based on false allegations made by a resident who had previously harassed them.
The plaintiff is seeking several forms of relief from the court: back pay with interest, front pay, compensatory and punitive damages for emotional distress suffered due to the alleged discrimination and retaliation, as well as reasonable attorney fees.
Representing Marlon Campbell Jr., attorney Peyton M. Paschke from Sulaiman Law Group Ltd., has demanded a jury trial for this case registered under Case ID: 1:25-cv-02667.
