In a compelling legal battle, a former employee has taken her grievances to the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division. Alexis Knight filed a collective action complaint on March 26, 2025, against New Tasty Biscuit, Inc., and its owner Hasnaa Hussein. The case highlights serious allegations of pregnancy discrimination and wage violations under federal and state laws.
Alexis Knight alleges that New Tasty Biscuit, Inc., along with its owner Hasnaa Hussein, failed to pay minimum wages as required by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the Illinois Minimum Wage Law (IMWL). Additionally, Knight accuses the defendants of pregnancy-based discrimination in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act of 2023. According to the complaint, Knight was employed as a manager in August 2023 before transitioning to a waitress position until her termination on May 28, 2024. She claims that after informing her supervisor about her pregnancy in December 2023, she faced discriminatory remarks from management. General Manager Tracey allegedly expressed concerns about Knight's ability to continue working while pregnant. Despite assurances from Knight regarding her capability to perform job duties during pregnancy, she faced persistent discriminatory attitudes.
The complaint further details how Knight was terminated under the pretext of a social media video posted months prior. The video did not violate company policy but was used as justification for termination. Knight argues this was merely a cover for unlawful discrimination based on her pregnancy. Moreover, she claims retaliation for engaging in protected activities under relevant laws.
Knight seeks relief through several avenues: unpaid wages and liquidated damages due to wage violations; compensatory and punitive damages for discrimination; back pay with interest; attorney fees; and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court. The plaintiff also demands that this litigation proceed as a collective action under FLSA provisions.
Representing Alexis Knight is attorney Travis P. Lampert from Sulaiman Law Group Ltd., based in Lombard, Illinois. The case has been assigned Case ID: 1:25-cv-03212.
