A tenant is suing his landlord over claims his Chicago apartment unit contained bedbugs.

Anthony Courtney filed suit Feb. 9 in Cook County Circuit Court against Peter Popovic and 5476 N. Sheridan Road.

According to the complaint, Courtney entered into an apartment lease for a unit in a building at 5476 N. Sheridan Road on May 2, 2014, when Popovic  presented him with a document stating the apartment was free from bedbugs and in good condition.

Courtney, however, alleges he was bitten by numerous bedbugs during his first night in the apartment. He claims Popovic knew or should have known the unit was infested with bedbugs and knew the addendum to the lease was materially false.

Courtney seeks $50,000 in damages, along with costs and attorney fees, and is represented by attorney Michael A. Hume of Cary J. Wintroub & Associates in Chicago.

This is a report on a civil lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court. The details in this report come from an original complaint filed by a plaintiff.
