A patient is suing two doctors, a medical practice and hospital, alleging she was discharged despite suffering from malaria.

Danartra Leonard filed a lawsuit June 16 in Cook County Circuit Court against Thorek Memorial Hospital, Dr. Eduardo Navarrete, EPMG of Illinois and Dr. Virginia Valadka, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, on Sept. 7, 2013, after blood tests were examined showing infection following a recent trip to Africa, Leonard was released from Thorek Memorial Hospital in Chicago. As a result, the lawsuit states, Leonard suffered vascular trouble, multiple organ failure, and dialysis and kidney treatment, as well as scarring, loss of a normal life, pain and suffering and medical expenses.

The suit says the defendants negligently discharged the plaintiff and failed to diagnose her with malaria, treat the malaria, admit her to the hospital, and consult with an infectious disease expert.

Leonard seeks damages of more than $2 million, plus costs. She is represented by attorneys Mark W. Mathys and Mark T. Schneid, of the Law Offices of Mathys and Schneid in Naperville.

Cook County Circuit Court Case No. 2015L006074.
