A Chicago man, allegedly injured when an elevator at O'Hare International Airport malfunctioned, is suing the city and the companies responsible for the elevator's condition.
Jeremy Smith filed a lawsuit June 15 in Cook County Circuit Court against Carlsen's Elevator Services Inc., Abell Elevator International Inc. and the city of Chicago, alleging negligence against each defendant.
According to the complaint, on June 16, 2014, Smith was trying to take the elevator at O'Hare on the second floor. White entered the elevator, the lawsuit states, and the elevator floor raised 6 to 12 inches above floor level, causing Smith to trip and fall, at which point the elevator snapped and fell about 1 1/2 feet below the entry level.
The lawsuit states Smith sustained injuries, pain and suffering, and medical expenses.
The suit says the defendants improperly maintained the elevator, clearing it for public use and failing to prevent injury, monitor the elevator's condition, inspect the elevator, have it operating safely, protect the plaintiff from danger and repair the elevator.
Smith seeks damages of more than $150,000, plus costs. He is represented by attorney Adam M. Gilbert, of the Sherwood Law Group in Chicago.
