Stairwell fall leads to court action

Cookcountycourt

A woman is suing the parties she alleges caused a slip-and-fall accident on a stairway.

Judith Catalano filed a lawsuit June 24 in Cook County Circuit Court against Wanxiang America Corp., doing business as Bannockburn Executive Plaza, Dolan Associates, McShane Construction Co., and Prime Architectural Metal and Glass Inc., alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, on Sept. 12, 2013, Catalano was at 2275 Half Day Road, Bannockburn, which was built, owned managed or being renovated by the defendants, when she slipped on construction debris left on the stairway. She reached for a handrail, the lawsuit states, but there wasn't one, causing her to fall and injure herself.

The suit alleges the defendants allowed the stairs to remain in an unsafe condition, causing debris to remain on its floors and failing to provide a safe ingress and egress to and from its location, provide handrails on the stairs, and provide adequate lighting, inspect its premises, maintain its premises, and provide a warning about an unsafe condition.

As a result, the lawsuit states, Catalano sustained permanent injuries, pain and suffering and medical expenses.

Catalano seeks damages in excess of the court's jurisdictional limit. She is represented by attorney Gary Newland of Newland & Newland in Arlington Heights.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015L063048.
