Woman sues over hip dislocation at hospital

Cookcountycourt

A woman is suing a local medical institution for a fall that allegedly led to her enduring yet another hip dislocation.

June Morris, by and through her representative Stephanie Lane, filed a complaint June 29 in Cook County Circuit Court against St. Alexius Medical Center, Alexian Brothers Women and Children's Hospital, Alexian Brothers Health System, Alexian Brothers Ambulatory Group and Alexian Brothers Medical Group.

On July 30, 2013, June Morris was admitted to the defendant's facility, complaining of diarrhea and nausea. During her stay, through Aug. 2, 2013, it was known that she was a high risk for falling. Before her stay, the lawsuit states, she had endured a left hip fracture on July 6, 2013, as well as dislocations of the same hip on July 15 and 28, 2013.

On Aug. 2, 2013, while attempting to bathe Morris, the lawsuit states, a nursing assistant for St. Alexius caused her to fall and dislocate her left hip again.

The defendants are cited with failing to provide two or more people to help Morris bath or transfer somewhere, provide her adequate assistance while bathing, assess the plaintiff for falls, institute proper fall precautions, execute fall measures, and assess her needs. The defendant also is cited for transferring her without assistance, dropper her while bathing her and allowing her to fall and sustain injuries.

As a result, the lawsuit states, Morris suffered injury, pain and suffering, and other personal and pecuniary damages.

The plaintiff seeks damages in excess of $50,000, plus costs. The plaintiff is represented by Brian J. Holmes and Micheal T. Mertz of Hurley, McKenna and Mertz PC in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015L006621.
