A Cook County man is suing a municipal corporation, several utility companies and a homeowner, alleging negligence when he says he toppled into a hole in a downtown Chicago sidewalk and sustained injuries.

Thomas Skryd filed a lawsuit July 2 in Cook County Circuit Court against the city of Chicago, Meade Electric Co. Inc., The People’s Gas Light and Coke Co., and Anne Conway, alleging four separate counts of negligence in the 2013 accident.

According to the filing, the city of Chicago was responsible for maintaining the sidewalk near 4910 N. Mason Ave. Chicago, on Aug. 23, 2014, when Skyrd tripped and fell into a hole in the sidewalk. The suit says defendants Meade Electric Co. and The People’s Gas Light and Coke Co. were installing gas facilities on the site on that date, and Anne Conway was the owner of the residential property at the address.

The suit states the defendants were collectively negligent by failing to safely maintain the property, supervise the area, post warnings, erect barricades to steer traffic away from hazard and repair the defects in a timely manner.

The plaintiff alleges external and internal injuries to his neck, back, limbs and right knee, plus permanent disability and medical expenses.

Skyrd seeks damages in excess of the jurisdictional minimum, plus attorney fees and costs. He is represented by Cuda Law Offices in Oak Park.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015L0006761.
