Woman sues over damaging spinal procedure allegedly performed on wrong disc

Surgery

A woman is suing a doctor, medical practice and a hospital after learning a spinal surgery had been performed two years ago on the wrong disc.

Coleen Geary filed a complaint on July 13 in Cook County Circuit Court against Northwestern Medicine, Cadence Health, Central DuPage Health, Delnor Community Health System, CDH-Delnor Health System, Cadence Physician Group and Dr. Andrew G. Chenelle.

On July 15, 2013, Chenelle performed on Geary a partial hemilaminectomy and discectomy at Central DuPage Hospital. After the surgery, according to the lawsuit, she suffered severe leg numbness and remained under Chenelle's care until about May 27.

According to the lawsuit, on June 1, Geary went to another neurosurgeon and learned the surgery had been performed on the wrong disc and the original surgery had created a permanent spinal injury.

The defendants are cited for negligence in injuring Geary's spine during surgery, and failing to perform the proper surgery, to communicate the risks of undergoing the surgery and to obtain consent.

The plaintiff seeks damages of more than $100,000, plus costs.

The plaintiff is represented by Hurley, McKenna and Mertz PC in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015L007103.
