Woman alleges doctor, hospital misdiagnosed ectopic pregnancy, caused miscarriage

A woman who miscarried is suing a doctor and hospital, alleging they performed the wrong kind of prenatal treatment to save her pregnancy.

Jerika Nesbitt filed a lawsuit July 24 in Cook County Circuit Court against Norwegian American Hospital Inc., doing business as Norwegian American Hospital, and Dr. Max Izbicki.

According to the complaint, on Nov. 13, 2014, Nesbitt visited the defendant hospital in Chicago and doctor to get a treatment of methotrexate for a potential ectopic pregnancy The suit says the defendants incorrectly administered methotrexate and failed to rule out a intrauterine pregnancy, obtain a repeat transvaginal ultrasound, obtain informed consent, and administer additional testing before the methotrexate treatment.

As a result, Nesbitt suffered "the loss of a previously viable fetus," as well as pain and suffering, disability and disfigurement, and medical expenses, the lawsuit states.

Nesbitt seeks damages in excess of the court's jurisdictional limits, plus legal costs. She is represented by attorney Jennifer K. Scifo of Kralovec, Jambois & Schwartz in Chicago.
