A former hotel guest is suing over insect bites she allegedly sustained from an overnight stay that required medical attention.
Brenda Cornelious, a resident of Racine, Wis., filed suit against A&P Hospitality LLC, which represents the Magnuson Hotel, on Aug. 20 in the Cook County Circuit Court, Law Division.
According to the complaint, on June 7, 2014, the plaintiff was a guest at the Magnuson Hotel in Calumet Park and allegedly woke up in the night with one eye swollen shut and various red bumps on her back, arms and face. She checked out early and went to the Metro South Medical Center in Blue Island for treatment.
The physician there confirmed that the bumps were indeed insect bites, and subsequently prescribed medication to treat them, the complaint states. The plaintiff claims she suffered from itching, swelling, pain, discomfort, and general embarrassment from the bed bug bites. As bed bugs are commonly associated with poor housekeeping, filthy conditions, and bad hygiene, and live within mattresses, box springs, and more, the plaintiff alleges that the injuries were indeed suffered on the premises of said hotel, according to the complaint.
The plaintiff is seeking damages of more than $50,000 for negligence, out-of-pocket expenses, mental anguish, pain and suffering, and lawyer and court costs.
