UPDATE: Cook County court records indicate this case was voluntarily dismissed by the plaintiff on Dec. 2, 2016.
A Chicago woman is suing University of Chicago Medical Center and one of its podiatrists over claims of alleged negligence that led to the partial amputation of the woman's leg.
Loretta Johnson filed a complaint Sept. 8 in Cook County Circuit Court against the University of Chicago Medical Center, doing business as the University of Chicago Medicine, and Ann Zmuda, DPM, alleging negligence.
The complaint states that on April 18, 2013, Johnson sought treatment from the defendants for diabetic foot ulcers. Johnson continued to seek treatment from Zmuda until she was admitted to University of Chicago Medical Center on Sept. 3, 2013, for fever and cellulitis.
On Sept. 10, 2013, Johnson underwent a right below-knee amputation at the medical center due to a deep foot abscess and osteomyelitis, according to the complaint.
The complaint states that the defendants were negligent in their failure to timely and properly diagnose and treat Johnson's abscess and osteomyelitis, and in their failure to timely refer her to an appropriate specialist.
Johnson seeks a judgment against the defendants that will fairly and adequately compensate for her injuries and damages. She is represented by Alexander M. Sukhman of Kralovec Jambois & Schwartz in Chicago.
