The U.S. Justice Department is suing the city of Des Plaines, saying the city broke federal law when it refused the request of a group of Bosnian Sufi Muslims to open a mosque in one of the western suburb’s industrial areas. The intervention comes as the group continues its own lawsuit against the city.

Appellate panel: Chicago's three-mile radius car rental tax OK as tax on 'use' not 'transaction'
The city of Chicago can pull its controversial three-mile-radius car rental tax from the curb, after a state appellate panel determined the tax is a “use tax” assessed only on city residents using their rented vehicles in the city, and not an attempt to slap a transaction tax on vehicle rentals outside of city limits, which otherwise would have been an illegal extension of the city’s authority.

CHICAGO – The Cook County Circuit Court clerk is offering county citizens one last chance to reconcile delinquent court fees and fines before new taxation laws on overdue fines take effect in 2016. Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County Dorothy Brown said the county is holding its inaugural Amnesty Week Oct. 5-9, 2015.

On Sept. 24, the Illinois State Supreme Court ended the latest round in a legal battle that dates back to 2005, when several minority shareholders in Beeland Management LLC hired the law firm of McGuireWoods to sue Beeland.
