A mother is suing the Chicago Park District following the drowning death of her son in Lake Michigan.
Lashonda Jackson, mother and special administrator of the estate of Eddie Horns, filed a complaint Sept. 9 in Cook County Circuit Court against Chicago Park District, alleging premises liability.
The complaint states that on July 24, at about 7 p.m. when it was still daylight, at a 31st Street pier and beach area owned and operated by the Chicago Park District, the lifeguards on duty left their posts without warning to the people swimming in Lake Michigan. At this time, the complaint states, 17-year-old Horns drowned in the waters off the pier.
The complaint states that the Chicago Park District, through its employees, was negligent in its failure to notify the swimming public that the lifeguards were leaving their posts and that everyone should leave the water at that time, among other negligent acts or omissions.
Horns is survived by his parents and eight siblings, all of whom have suffered pecuniary losses as a result of his death.
Jackson seeks a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs of the suit. She is represented by Jeffrey S. Deutschman of Deutschman & Associates PC of Chicago.
