A Cook County woman is suing a doctor and a Chicago hospital, alleging delayed treatment brought on a patient’s death.
Halina Serafin, independent administrator of the estate of Zdzislaw Kaczmaruk, filed a lawsuit Sept. 14 in Cook County Circuit Court against Presence Resurrection Medical Center, Presence Health Partners and Dr. Goodwin D’Souza. She also named other health care providers and more than a dozen other doctors as respondents in discovery.
According to the complaint, Kaczmaruk was admitted to Presence Hospital on Sept. 14, 2013, for evaluation after complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath. Four days later, the suit says, he was transferred to another hospital for treatment, where he died Sept. 30, 2013.
The lawsuit states Kaczmaruk died as a result of negligence that occurred while he was a patient at Presence Hospital.
Serafin seeks damages of more than $50,000, including medical expenses and punitive damages. She is represented by attorneys James A. Karamanis and Jennifer Timm of Barney & Karamanis in Chicago.
