Daughter sues health service providers, alleging neglect in elderly mother's death

A Cook County woman is suing the nursing care providers of her 88-year-old mother, alleging neglect in treatment preceding her death.

Roxanne Jones, independent administrator of the estate of Rachel Jones, filed a lawsuit Oct. 27 in Cook County Circuit Court against Presidential Pavilion, Forest Edge Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center doing business as Bria Health Services of Forest Edge, and Bria Health Services.

According to the complaint, Rachel Jones, who suffered from dementia, lived at the defendant’s facilities from May 2009 until October 2013, with intermittent stays at acute care facilities. The suit says Jones developed severe foot ulcers that required her to undergo a left leg amputation Jan. 26, 2012.

On several occasions after the amputation, the suit says, Jones was hospitalized with sepsis, dehydration, urinary tract infections and other illnesses due to the defendants’ neglect. After being discovered unresponsive with 104-degree fever, low blood pressure and septic shock, Jones died Oct. 29, 2013.

Roxanne Jones seeks damages in of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorney Jonathan W. Young of Kralovec, Jambois & Schwartz in Chicago.
