A Cook County student-athlete is suing Dominican University, alleging negligence in a dispute involving the school’s soccer training regimen.
Mary Powell, 20, of Forest View, filed a lawsuit Aug. 21 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dominican University, Sinsinawa Dominicans Inc., and Sinsinawa Dominicans Inc., doing business as Dominican University.
According to the complaint, Powell, a freshman on the women’s soccer team, suffered heat stroke and collapsed in the college’s fitness center Aug. 21, 2013. The suit says the university failed to not only monitor and detect her warning signs of heat stroke, but also prescribed a workout regimen that did not take players’ body weight into account and provided inadequate time for rest.
Powell seeks damages in of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorney Ryan M. Griffin of Goldstein, Bender & Romanoff in Chicago.
