Wife blames Grandbar nightclub for husband’s death

CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing a Chicago nightclub, alleging her husband, a father of four minor children, fell to his death as a result of unsafe conditions on the premises.

Jennifer Ayala, special administrator of the estate of Miguel Ayala, filed a lawsuit Dec. 18 in Cook County Circuit Court against Grand+Ashland Tap Inc., doing business as Grandbar, and Betty Stokes, alleging negligence and wrongful death.

According to the complaint, on Dec. 5, Miguel Ayala suffered severe head injuries when he fell down a cement stairway into the Grandbar’s basement, 1600 W. Grand Ave., Chicago, while trying to re-enter the. The suit says the bar should have maintained safe conditions on the establishment’s back patio where the incident occurred, or should have warned patrons about the staircase. Ayala died of his injuries Dec. 6, 2015.

Ayala seeks damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorney Kristin J. Kladis of Harvey L. Walner & Associates Ltd. in Chicago.
