Cook County woman alleges medical malpractice after daughter's hip surgery

CHICAGO –– A Cook County mother is suing an orthopedic surgeon and the hospital at which he works, claiming that her daughter sustained a serious injury during surgery due to negligence.

Tahani Spearman filed a lawsuit in the Cook County Circuit Court on Jan. 20 against Dr. Prasad V. Gourineni of Pediatric and Young Adult Orthopaedics, and Advocate Health and Hospitals Corp. doing business as Advocate Christ Medical Center, a not-for-profit corporation. Spearman alleges her daughter sustained an injury during surgery performed by Gourineni, which has resulted in numerous medical bills for which Spearman is now responsible.

According to court documents, Gourineni examined Spearman’s daughter on several occasions. He took X-rays, but Spearman’s daughter never received an MRI.

It was determined that surgery was needed; and on Nov. 23, 2012, Gourineni performed a left hip arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure, according to the claim. He also performed an acetabular rim trimming, labral refixiation with suture anchors and femoral neck osteoplasty.

The court documents state Spearman’s daughter suffered an injury to her subchondral bone and hip joint during the surgery.

There are several claims of negligence related to the performing of the left hip arthroscopy, acetabular rim trimming, labral refixiation with suture anchors and femoral neck osteoplasty, as well as performing these surgeries without an MRI being done on the hip.

The suit claims that the injuries are of both personal and pecuniary nature, which has resulted in various hospital and medical expenses.

Spearman is seeking judgment against Gourineni and Advocate Christ Medical Center. Spearman is being represented by David R. Barry Jr.. of Corboy and Demetrio, PC, in Chicago.
