Estate of deceased woman sues hospital in alleged wrongful death

Catheter

CHICAGO –– The next of kin of a deceased Cook County woman is suing a hospital, alleging the hospital’s negligence lead to her death.

Robert Allen Powers, special administrator of the estate of Eileen M. Powers, filed a lawsuit against Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Cook County Circuit Court on Jan. 20, claiming the hospital performed a procedure that delayed a proper diagnosis of the deceased.

According to court documents, on Sept. 2, 2014, Eileen Powers was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for a surgical procedure as well as other health-care services. The documents allege that the hospital was negligent in their care of Powers by performing an “unnecessary” procedure, which was placing a venous catheter in her neck, failing to monitor the catheter, and failing to discover the catheter had moved into the carotid artery.

The document goes on to state that as a result of the hospital’s negligence, there was a delay in diagnosing and treating Powers’ medical conditions, “which contributed to cause her death on Sept. 8, 2014.”

The estate is suing for $100,000 for injuries suffered by the plaintiff including grief and the loss of companionship and guidance, as well as medical and funeral expenses.

The plaintiff is being represented by Jeffrey A. Schulkin of Munday, Nathan and Schulkin in Chicago.
