Family accuses medical facilities of wrongful death

Medical malpractice 02

CHICAGO — An estate administrator is suing a number of medical facilities, alleging their negligence caused the death of a relative.

Barbara Williams, as independent administrator of the estate of Bernice Bryant, filed a lawsuit May 13 in Cook County Circuit Court against Holy Cross Hospital, Inc., Manorcare of Oak Lawn (East) LLC, Manorcare Health Services LLC and Heartland Employment Services LLC, alleging negligence and wrongful death.

According to the complaint, on Aug. 4, 2014, Bryant was admitted to Holy Cross Hospital in Chicago due to urinary tract infection and weakness and was at high risk for skin breakdown and deterioration of pressure sores. While a patient, the suit says, she developed pressure sores.

As a result of the hospital's negligent acts, the lawsuit states, Bryant suffered injuries, deterioration of health, mental and psychological condition, plus loss of dignity and self respect. On Aug. 16, 2014, she was transferred to Manorcare Health Services in Homewood where she died June 15, 2015.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to accurately assess Bryant's risk for developing pressure sores, failed to appropriately develop and implement a care plan to address her risk for deterioration of pressure sores, failed to timely implement appropriate pressure sore interventions and failed to document and administer treatment, medication and care.

Williams seeks a trial by jury and judgment of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorneys Michael F. Bonamarte and Michelle L. Wesley of Levin & Perconti in Chicago.
