CHICAGO — A mother is suing Palos Community Hospital, saying alleged botched attempts in intensive care to treat her son for pneumonia resulted in his death from bleeding in his lungs and upper respiratory tract.
Barbara Baron, as independent administrator of the estate of Phillip Baron, filed a complaint on Feb. 23 in Cook County Circuit Court against Palos Community Hospital and a nurse.
According to the complaint, Baron was transported to the hospital and admitted in June 2015 for treatment of pneumonia and sepsis, among other conditions. Four days later, the complaint alleges, a nurse attempted to suction Baron's tracheostomy tube to clear his airway, but allegedly used the wrong size catheter tube, resulting in his airway becoming blocked. During resuscitation, the complaint alleges, Baron suffered from "pulmonary hemorrhage," or bleeding in his lungs and upper respiratory tract. He was taken to a different hospital for treatment, but died a few days later, the complaint said.
The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendant in an amount greater than $50,000. She is represented by Bradley M. Cosgrove, Marta M. Davidson and Charles R. Haskins of Clifford Law Offices P.C. in Chicago.
