Amtrak accused of negligently exposing employee to toxic substances

CHICAGO — A woman is suing Amtrak for alleged negligence.

Sharlene Smith-Meachum filed a complaint on April 25 in Cook County Circuit Court, alleging the defendant violated the Federal Employers Liability Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges she was exposed to and inhaled harmful, hazardous and toxic agents, fumes, particles and substances without proper respiratory equipment and proper ventilation during her employment with the defendant. She claims that her unprotected work environment created an increased risk for injury, disease and illness.

As a result, the plaintiff claims that she now suffers from lung cancer that allegedly was caused by her exposure toxic substances at work.

The plaintiff holds the defendant responsible for allegedly failing to provide a reasonably safe place to work and for allegedly failing to warn her about the dangers, risks and hazards associated with being exposed to chemicals and substances at work.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment in an amount that exceeds the jurisdictional requirements of the court, plus the costs of the suit. She is represented by Andrew L. Hughes of the Hughes Law Offices LLC in Chicago.
