CHICAGO — A passenger is suing Southwest Airlines and its agents, citing alleged breach of duty and negligence.

Altramy Kelly filed a complaint June 1 in Cook County Circuit Court against the defendants, alleging they negligently failed to assist and provide reasonable care to a passenger who needed a wheelchair.

According to the complaint, Kelly was a passenger on a Southwest flight on July 17, 2016, and she required a wheelchair to exit the airline's gate. The plaintiff alleges an employee negligently steered the wheelchair without proper control, causing Kelly to sustain severe injuries, pain, emotional distress, disability and aggravation of pre-existing conditions and to incur medical expenses.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages of more than $50,000, excluding interest, costs, attorney's fees and other relief the court deems just and proper. She is represented by Adam B. Smestad of Smestad Law LLC in Glenview.
