Estate administrator blames John Stroger Jr. Hospital for patient's death

Medical malpractice 02

CHICAGO — An estate administrator is suing John Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and Cook County Health & Hospitals Systems, claiming the defendants did not take sufficient measures to prevent injuries.

Ruby Wheelis-Debose filed a lawsuit July 5 in Cook County Circuit Court, individually and as independent administrator of the estate of the late Dawn Wheelis, alleging the defendants violated the Survival Act by failing to render required medical care, services and attention.

According to the complaint, Dawn Wheelis came to the defendants' facility on July 23, 2016, for diarrhea, vomiting and weakness. Although surgery consults were performed and CT results were available or documented by physicians, no surgical intervention was recommended for Wheelis, according to the complaint.

As a result, the plaintiff alleges Wheelis developed sepsis and fasciitis caused by a decubitus ulcer that contributed to her death on Sept. 3, 2016.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks incidental and general damages and other relief the court deems proper. She is represented by Goldstein, Fluxgold & Baron PC in Chicago.
