CHICAGO – An Illinois man alleges a medical device released dangerous levels of cobalt into his body.
James Singleton filed a complaint on Dec. 17 in Cook County Circuit Court against Wright Medical Technology Inc. and Wright Medical Group alleging strict product liability and other counts.
According to the complaint, on Feb. 1, 2008, Singleton received a total hip replacement of his left hip with defendants' "metal on metal" prosthetic hip device.
He alleges he was required to undergo a second surgery in March 2017 to revise the device because it released "dangerous levels" of cobalt into his body and because the hip components became loose, the suit states.
The plaintiff alleges the defendants manufactured and assembled a product that contained latent and hidden defects that rendered it dangerous when used in its marketed, intended and foreseeable purpose.
The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment of more than $50,000, plus all available statutory and punitive damages, attorney fees, and costs. He is represented by Robert J. McLaughlin and Christina Flores of Hart McLaughlin & Eldridge LLC in Chicago.
