Paul M. Stanczyk, a former police officer with the Chicago Police Department (CPD), filed an appeal against The Retirement Board of the Policemen’s Annuity and Benefit Fund of the City of Chicago (Board) in the Appellate Court of Illinois, First District. The case ID is 1-22-1870 and was filed on March 19, 2024. Stanczyk appealed the decision that deemed him ineligible for disability benefits following a motor vehicle accident while on duty.

Stanczyk joined CPD on April 28, 2014, and had no prior history of serious health issues according to his "appraisal of health history" form. On June 23, 2017, he sustained injuries including a concussion and damage to his lower back, neck, left shoulder, and left upper extremity during a car chase. He exhausted all available medical leave by April 30, 2020.

Stanczyk applied for disability benefits on June 8, 2020, claiming that his injuries rendered him unable to perform his duties as a police officer. However, the Board found him ineligible for these benefits after conducting a hearing on August 26, 2021.

Stanczyk is seeking reversal of this decision by appealing to the court. He argues that he is indeed disabled due to the injuries sustained from the motor vehicle accident while on duty.
