The parents of a toddler are suing a Chicago hospital, claiming their son has suffered from seizures after being delivered with the help of forceps.

Neastacia Marin and Richard Melvin, individually and as parents of their minor child,  filed suit June 30 in the Cook County Circuit Court against The University of Chicago Medical Center.

According to the suit, doctors at the defendant medical center delivered the plaintiffs' baby on July 21, 2012 with the assistance of forceps. As a result, Marin and Melvin claim their son suffered from cephalohematoma, a collection of blood under a newborn’s skull.

Their child also began suffering from seizures, the suit states, adding that he was forced to undergo a procedure during which doctors placed a shunt in his head.

The plaintiffs accuse the defendant's doctors of negligently delivered their son, applying excessive force when they used the foreceps, improperly utilizing the foreceps and failing to properly manage the delivery.

They are seeking a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs, and are being represented by attorney Adria E. Mossing of Mossing & Navarre in Chicago.
