Jasmine Armstrong has filed a lawsuit against her former employer, Roundy’s Illinois, LLC, alleging discrimination and retaliation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The complaint was filed on February 20, 2025, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Armstrong accuses Roundy’s of failing to accommodate her disability, harassment based on her disability, and retaliating against her for seeking accommodations.
Armstrong worked as a cashier for Roundy’s from December 9, 2024, until she was terminated on January 9, 2025. She suffers from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which affects her ability to perform certain tasks without reasonable accommodation. Despite this condition, Armstrong claims she was able to fulfill her job duties with or without adjustments. On January 9, after experiencing a flare-up of wrist pain while dusting shelves, she requested to be reassigned to a self-checkout register as an accommodation. Her supervisor demanded a doctor’s note but did not engage further in the interactive process required by law to determine appropriate accommodations.
Later that day, Armstrong was summoned to a meeting with several managers where she was accused of changing her personality and told that other employees might question her request for accommodation. Shocked by these accusations—having never received negative feedback or disciplinary actions before—Armstrong was terminated the same day. She asserts that non-disabled employees were not subjected to similar treatment and believes her termination was due to her disability and request for accommodation.
The lawsuit alleges multiple violations of the ADA: discrimination based on disability; failure to provide reasonable accommodations; harassment due to disability; and retaliation for engaging in protected activities under the ADA. Armstrong seeks various forms of relief from the court including back pay with interest, front pay, compensatory and punitive damages, loss of benefits recovery, attorneys’ fees and costs, pre-judgment interest if applicable, and any other relief deemed just by the court.
