Chicago family sues for financial restitution, alleging wrongful death

A Chicago family is suing a long-term care facility, alleging wrongful death in the passing of a relative.

Juanita Williamson, independent administrator of the estate of Merldean Langford, deceased, filed suit Sept. 4 in Cook County Circuit Court, against Symphony Crestwood, doing business as Symphony of Crestwood, a long-time care facility, in Crestwood.

According to the complaint, on Sept. 4, 2013, Langford was admitted to Symphony of Crestwood, following a fall. The suit says on Feb. 3, 2014, Langford was transferred to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island, for care and other treatment, reportedly for seven ulcers and contractures of the lower extremities.

The lawsuit states Langford was given a prescription for tube feeding and readmitted to Symphony, then once again transferred to MetroSouth for wound care and other treatment. She had ulcers once again, the suit says, in addition to multiple contractures in all four extremities. She was then transferred to a nursing home facility, where she reportedly had six ulcers of 10 established sites where she lived until her death June 2, 2014, the suit says.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants are guilty of abuse and/or negligence, thus violating the Illinois Nursing Care Act in a variety of areas, causing Williamson and Langford to sustain substantial personal and pecuniary damages, including medical and hospital and other related expenses, disability and disfigurement, pain and suffering, mental and physical deterioration, physical and emotional trauma, as well as expenses incurred by death and the subsequent funeral expenses.

Williamson seeks damages more than the jurisdictional limit of the court, including court costs and attorney fees. She is represented by attorney Jeffrey Friedman of the Law Office of Jeffrey Friedman in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number is 2015-L-009161.
