Samsung, one of the world’s largest makers of televisions and other electronics, has been hit with a class action lawsuit over allegedly defective remote controls for its smart TVs, centered on claims the remotes can overheat and cause the AA batteries inside to leak potentially dangerous “battery juice.” The lawsuit was filed July 25 in Chicago federal court.

A state appeals panel has found a Cook County judge misapplied state law in dismissing a taxpayer’s nepotism complaint against a suburban high school district, saying the judge was too hasty in determining the Rich Township taxpayer lacked the ability to sue the district over the school board’s decision to reinstate a principal, with the principal’s husband casting the deciding vote.

The Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) has appointed a new president. Vincent F. Cornelius was selected as president of the ISBA during the association’s 140th annual meeting. Cornelius joins ISBA from the Law Office of Vincent F. Cornelius, with offices in Joliet and Wheaton, where he is principal. He is the bar association’s 140th president and the first African-American in this position.
